Situated at the western rim of the archipelago along the Strait of Malacca, for centuries the region was the gateway for maritime trade through Southeast Asia, receiving merchants from China, India, the Middle East and Europe. The thorns in the island’s side are the west coast’s susceptibility to earthquakes and tsunamis but for the intrepid traveller, the rewards are worthwhile. Allowing enough time here is the challenge. There is also memorable Danau Toba, Southeast Asia’s largest lake, along with impressive architecture, and ancient megaliths. Sumatra is a travel haven for nature-lovers, with surfing beaches and 11 national parks sheltering tigers, elephants and orangutans. Finally, it will touch on the various ethical issues surrounding such objects which occupy our deliberations today in the early 21st century.The best travel tips for visiting Sumatra This symposium addresses why certain objects were selected to be moved from their find-spots, how such objects passed from one location to another, and who were their major agents in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In particular, the discussions will focus on the biographies of such objects and the issues of their restitution.

Nine international scholars are being brought together to consider certain issues surrounding such objects now to be found in various locations around the world. This symposium examins the life stories of certain Hindu and Buddhist objects which originated from the islands of Java, Bali and Sumatra. This full day art history symposium, being held both in-person and on-line, has been twice deferred since it was first scheduled for May 2020.
